Course Overview

The IELTS Listening Test is one of the components of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). It assesses a candidate’s ability to understand spoken English in various contexts. Here is a summary of the IELTS Listening Test:

Format: The test consists of four recorded audio passages, played through headphones. The passages are diverse, such as conversations, monologues, interviews, and academic lectures.

Timing: The listening test takes approximately 30 minutes, not including the time given to transfer answers to the answer sheet.

Sections: There are four sections in the test, with each section getting progressively more challenging. The first two sections focus on everyday social situations, while the latter two sections are more academically oriented.

Section Focus Number of Questions
1 A conversation taking place in an everyday social situation. E.g a customer and sales advisor, two colleagues in an office. 10
2 A single person speaking in an everyday situation. 10
3 A conversation between 2 or more people in a more academic setting, such as a lesson or seminar. 10
4 A lecture or talk on an academic interest. 10

Question Types: The test includes various question types, such as multiple-choice, matching information, completing notes or sentences, labeling diagrams or maps, and short-answer questions.

Scoring: The Listening Test is scored on a scale of 0 to 9 bands. Each correct answer earns one point, and the total score is calculated to determine the candidate’s listening proficiency.

Listening Skills Assessed: The test assesses various listening skills, including understanding the main ideas and specific details, following a conversation or speech, and being able to infer implied meanings.

Test Strategies: Candidates should listen attentively to the audio, take notes as necessary, and manage time wisely. Pre-reading the questions before each section can be helpful.

Vocabulary: A good understanding of different accents, idiomatic expressions, and vocabulary will aid in comprehending the spoken passages.

Method to success: Practice. Regular practice with a variety of audio materials in English, especially academic lectures or presentations, will improve listening abilities and familiarity with the test format.
